It’s not that I expected the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) to come out and condemn Attorney General Dick Blumenthal (D-CT) for lying about his military service. The political organization is specifically charged with electing Democrats to the Senate, and Blumenthal is the best Democratic chance to hold the seat occupied by disgraced Senator Chris Dodd (D).
No, I just expected more effort. I mean, this is how you spin for a candidate who repeatedly lied about serving in a bloody war from which veterans returned only to be spat upon?
Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee communications director Eric Schultz put the blame for the story on Republicans and, in particular, former World Wrestling Entertainment executive Linda McMahon who is running for the GOP nod.
“Its no surprise Republicans would want to smear Dick Blumenthal, considering all of the debauchery at [WWE] under Linda McMahon’s watch,” said Schultz.
Wow, a completely off-topic attack on an opposing candidate and her party over a New York Times story even Blumenthal himself can’t deny. Incidentally, McMahon reportedly tipped off the Times to this controversy. But who did all of the real work and analysis? Ahem:
After obtaining Mr. Blumenthal’s Selective Service records through a Freedom of Information Act request, The New York Times asked David Curry, a professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and an expert on the Vietnam draft, to examine them.
Those dang New York Times reporters and college professor, always trying to bring Democratic candidates down so as to distract from Republican “debauchery”. Curse them and their entire right-wing cabal for pointing out a Democratic candidate has been lying about his military service for years. Curse them, I say!
Seriously, this is the best the DSCC could do? Between this and the non-denial response from Blumenthal’s campaign, it would appear that the Times‘ scandalous accusations are true. They wouldn’t spin this badly and half-heartedly if the story could be debunked.
