PROJECTION: Critz (D) To Win PA-12 Special Election

by Stephan Tawney on May 18, 2010

Mark Critz (D) will win the 2010 special House election for the Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional district, defeating Tim Burns (R) in an area overwhelmingly Democratic, but one national Republicans were hoping to pick up.

Is this a bad omen for November? Unlikely. Democrats hold a 3-1 registration advantage in the district, which was held by Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) who was re-elected by an easy margin after literally calling his constituents redneck racists. It’s not a typical purple or red district like those Republicans are targeting for the mid-terms.

This is the district home to Murtha’s notorious multi-million dollar, taxpayer-funded airport that’s used by just about no one and yet named after the late Congressman. The voters like Democratic appropriations.

Still, Republicans were hoping to use anti-Obama sentiment to pick-off the heavily-Democratic district. It just didn’t happen in the end. The district was more loyal to a Democratic candidate, any Democratic candidate, than they wished.

Update: The Washington Post reports that Burns (R) has conceded.
