Red Shirt leaders in Bangkok have announced they will surrender following the Thai army’s overrunning of the Red Shirt camp.

Update: Here we go:

Leaders of Thailand’s anti-government protest movement said Wednesday that will surrender to police after a military offensive against their rally base that left at least five dead.

Big development.

Update X2: Reports say police are entering the main protest site while leaders deliver their surrender speech. Which isn’t to say everyone is pleased with the outcome.

Seven Red Shirt leaders went on stage in the core protest zone to announce their decision, which was greeted with shouts of dismay from the men and women gathered around.

Protest leader Natawut Saikua said “we have done our best.” Weng Tojirakarn said “we want to prevent further losses of our Red Shirt brothers and sisters.”

He said “let us first prevent further losses of lives,” and urged supporters to leave the area.

Are things really over? We shall see.

Update X3: Reuters says four leaders have appeared in policy custody on Thai television.
