Mayor Villaraigosa Out Of Touch With Reality

by Stephan Tawney on May 19, 2010

Los Angeles decided to start a trade war with Arizona over the latter’s new law intended to crack down on illegal immigration. Arizona responded in kind, threatening to cut off power to Los Angeles. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of L.A. isn’t happy about getting a bit of his own medicine.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday defiantly rejected a warning by a top Arizona utilities official that the state could cut off power to Los Angeles should the city proceed with its boycott of all things Arizona.

Spokesman David Beltran told Fox News that the message didn’t even warrant a response.

We’re not going to respond to threats from a state which has isolated itself from the America that values freedom, liberty and basic human rights,” Beltran said.

In leftist America, “freedom, liberty and basic human rights” now include the ability to remain illegally in a country you weren’t invited into and aren’t supposed to occupy. Good to know.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 13% of Adults think Mexico wants to stop illegal immigration. Sixty-seven percent (67%) say Mexico does not want to stop its citizens from entering the United States illegally…

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of Americans think Mexico should be asked to compensate U.S. taxpayers to offset such costs [of illegal immigration]…

Most voters (55%) now favor passage of an immigration law like Arizona’s in their own state. When asked specifically about the chief provision of the Arizona law, support is even higher. Sixty-nine percent (69%) believe a police officer should be required to check the immigration status of anyone stopped for a traffic violation or violation of some other law if he suspects the person might be an illegal immigrant.

CBS News also published a poll recently in which 60% of Americans thought the Arizona law was either acceptable or didn’t go far enough to curb illegal immigration.

And the Pew Research Center even more recently found “broad approval” for the law, including a majority of Democrats on the legislation’s specific provisions.

Via Hot Air, Andrew Malcolm of the LA Times writes:

So, the choice is clear. If L.A.’s Democrat pols follow through and stop buying turquoise jewelry and bolo ties from Arizona, the next-door Republican neighbors will arrange some uncomfortable brownouts during the coming warm days.

Don’t mess with Arizona.
