Breaking: Rob Simmons To End U.S. Senate Campaign

by Stephan Tawney on May 24, 2010

Rob Simmons has reportedly notified his staff that he will drop his bid for United States Senate from Connecticut. Simmons has been trailing GOP rival Linda McMahon in the polls over the past few months.

The development is definitely a shame. Like Jim Geraghty, I liked Simmons. He’s a decorated veteran, former CIA operative, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and staunch conservative. The nation would’ve been better off with Rob Simmons in the United States Senate.

I figured the news was coming after the Simmons campaign announced a press conference for tomorrow, during which there was supposed to be an “announcement on the future of the campaign for U.S. Senate”. When the candidate is trailing badly in a primary, that usually only means one thing.

Update: Another Connecticut-based reporter has sources saying Simmons will drop his bid.
