Yet more evidence that the Obama Administration views the United States as just another name on the United Nations membership list. Speaking before the European Parliament, Vice President Joe Biden decides to slam Washington by verbally moving the “capital of the free world” to Brussels.
As you probably know, some American politicians and American journalists refer to Washington, DC as the “capital of the free world.” But it seems to me that this great city, which boasts 1,000 years of history and which serves as the capital of Belgium, the home of the European Union, and the headquarters for NATO, this city has its own legitimate claim to that title.
This continues the trend of denying American exceptionalism. Note his opening, where he distinguishes that American politicians and American journalists refer to Washington as the “capital of the free world”. He’s pointing out a nationalistic bias similar to the one Obama mentioned earlier:
I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism, and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.
In short, there’s nothing objectively exceptional about democracy’s arsenal. It’s just a bias of our nationality. It’s very similar to what Joe Biden was hinting at in the opening: That it’s simply American bias to consider America exceptional or Washington the capital of the free world.
The Obama Administration considers itself a post-American administration, free of the detriment of national loyalty and bias. The idea of American exceptionalism is rejected as nothing more than jingoism.
Obama considers himself a global citizen who currently leads the United States — not an American citizen charged with standing up for his country. That’s why we get a never-ending global apology tour, bows to foreign leaders, and efforts to expand the powers of global institutions.
But besides all of that, what has Brussels done to deserve the title “capital of the free world”? Has it spent a great amount of its own treasure and blood to ensure the continued freedom of said world? Does Brussels take the lead on the defense of free trade routes, weak allied nations, or even free Europe itself? Hardly.
The sad fact is that Europe would be able to do little in its own defense (outside of unleashing a nuclear war) if Russia or China moved to expand territory tomorrow. There would be immediate calls for the United States to act, and we would do just that. Because we lead the free world and have put ourselves in the position to defend it.
