Helen Thomas “Apologizes” for Her Comments About Jews

by Stephan Tawney on June 4, 2010

What kind of apology can you provide for having said that Israel shouldn’t exist and Jews should be sent back to Germany and Poland? A weasel-y, say-nothing apology like this:

I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.

Uh huh. There was no nuance — none at all — to Thomas’ statement last week. She was caught on video saying the Jews should “get the hell” out of Palestine and go back to Germany and Poland. She was clearly passionate about her response and felt no need to clarify her comments until Drudge made it an issue today.

Thomas let her far-left mask slip. She’s anti-Israeli and likely antisemitic. Her “apology” comes after media attention and amounts to “I regret having been caught exposing my views on camera”. Especially in light of her past comments about Israel. Pardon my French, but her “apology” is CYA bullshit.

Will other media outlets condemn her statement? Doubtful. Not a single major outlet has covered the statement yet and the video has been floating around since this morning. Her view is actually more mainstream on the left than we’d like to believe. She’s probably not the only one in the WHPC who shares these beliefs.
