No, this isn’t one of those inevitable “we were robbed!” posts by a disappointed fan following a disappointing game. This was a pretty clear-cut robbery.
In fact, ESPN commentators — including an England partisan — noted at the time of the call that Slovenia — the team we were playing — had actually been committing fouls that should have resulted in penalty kicks for the United States. But instead of punishing Slovenia, the referee disqualifies the United States’ goal.
So Slovenia was allowed to get away with multiple examples of untoward activity while the United States was punished. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, so the disqualified goal cost the United States a World Cup victory.
The reason for the disqualification? Koman Coulibaly, the referee in question, evidently didn’t state one at the time.
Now the excuse is that American defender Carlos Bocanegra had his arms around Slovenian player Jejc Pecnik, but the video clearly shows two Slovenian players holding back American counterparts. No penalties on them.
