Inspired by Fortune’s list under the same name, here’s our version. All do respect to Fortune, but some items that shouldn’t be there were there and some that should be there weren’t there. So here we go, in no particular order.

11) Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks

It’s often the case that people who love Dunkin’ Donuts hate Starbucks and those who love Starbucks hate Dunkin’ Donuts. But whatever the case, having coffee shops on every corner is a significant part of American life and culture today.

Mmmm.

12) Dominos, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Etc.

Whether you’re a college student pulling an all-nighter or an adult employee ordering out for lunch, delivery pizza has become a lucrative business and rightly so.

13) The Super Bowl

Some people watch for the game, others watch for the ads. And some watch just to say they watched. What the reason, millions upon millions of Americans gather around their televisions to watch the biggest sporting event of the year.

14) American Literature

Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, John Steinbeck, Henry David Thoreau. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Hope, Of Mice and Men, Walden.

15) Family Road Trips

Pack the family in the car and head off for Mount Rushmore, the Grand Canyon, Gettysburg, and other legendary American landmarks.

16) Washington, D.C.

At least once in your life you should visit the nation’s capital. Viewing the Lincoln Memorial and other landmarks at night will take your breath away. Simply astonishing.

17) College Life

Heading off to college as your parents solemnly recall your childhood, setting yourself up in a dorm for the first time, and the rest.

The family sits around watching football and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The wonderful smell of turkey emanates throughout the house. The real start of the holiday season.
