100 Great Things About America, TAP Edition, Part 3

by Stephan Tawney on July 2, 2010

Inspired by Fortune’s list under the same name, here’s our version. All do respect to Fortune, but some items that shouldn’t be there were there and some that should be there weren’t there. So here we go, in no particular order.

Sun and Surf.

21) Summer Beach Days

Taking your beach chair, radio, and cooler to the beach for a day of sun and surf.

22) Bumper Stickers

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, bumper stickers are one of the most popular outlets for free speech. They’re a must-have for any political campaign even in today’s world of social media and web advertising.

23) Google AdSense

I’m a little biased on this one. See, AdSense is Google’s advertising service. All you have to do is apply, post the code on your website, and work on drawing readers. Even an average schmo like me can earn revenue from the fruits of my online labor. Heralds back to free enterprise.

24) McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Etc.

Okay, not every item on the McDonalds menu is the healthiest food known to man. But think about this. The fast food business is able to feed large numbers of people effectively, cheaply, and attractively. I wouldn’t suggest eating Big Macs every night for months, but if you’re low on dough, the $1 burgers and $1 drinks aren’t the worst you could do. Viva McDonalds.

25) Wal-Mart

The scourge of some, especially in the union sector, Wal-Mart is nevertheless an important part of many Americans’ household budgets. Never mind inexpensive necessities, you can be lost in the middle of nowhere and still come across an outlet where you can purchase safe, brand name products at a reasonable price. Viva Wal-Mart.

26) Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Mr. Pibb, Etc.

Grab a burger and a Coke and you can fit in just about anywhere in America.

27) eBay

Here’s an entry that will make Meg Whitman happy. eBay has become such a well-known auction site that its name is mentioned in Toy Story 3 and has become synonymous for online auctions.

28) Library of Congress

The largest and most extensive library in the world. More than 21,814,555 books and a total of 111,046,531 items.

29) Public Libraries

I’m referring to more than just publicly-funded institutions. Any book repository open to the public that allows individuals free or cheap access to quality information meets the definition.

30) County and State Fairs

I mean, come on. Political candidates are still known to attend county and state fairs in order to be associated with Americana.
