100 Great Things About America, TAP Edition, Part 5

by Stephan Tawney on July 3, 2010

Inspired by Fortune’s list under the same name, here’s our version. All do respect to Fortune, but some items that shouldn’t be there were there and some that should be there weren’t there. So here we go, in no particular order.

41) The Wizard of Oz

Somewhere over the rainbow, Judy Garland transforms from a world of sepia to one of technicolor.

42) Lexington and Concord

The beginning of it all. Brave men seeking their freedom stood up and fired the first shots of the revolution.

43) The Georgia Aquarium

Here’s an interesting one. Not only is the Atlanta aquarium the largest in the world but its funding comes almost entirely from a $250 million donation from Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of American home improvement store Home Depot.

44) The Supreme Court of the United States

I don’t agree with every decision handed down by the high-court. But it undoubtedly serves an important purpose, as we were reminded recently when the court struck down unconstitutional handgun bans nationwide.

45) Old Faithful

Thousands of gallons of steaming water are discharged every 45 to 125 minutes.

46) Short and Sandles

Perfect for that warm summer day when you don’t feel like sweating through your clothes.

47) Country Music

Some hate it, some love it. Whatever your preference, there’s no denying the Americana basis.

48) Respect for Veterans and Active Duty Personnel

Generally speaking, we love our fighting men and women — past and present. That hasn’t always been the case, unfortunately, but it most certainly is today. Thank God for them.

49) The Greatest Generation

These are the men and women who fought to stave off National Socialism (Nazism) and Japanese imperialism. They literally saved freedom.

50) Niagara Falls

The American side, of course.
