100 Great Things About America, TAP Edition, Part 7

by Stephan Tawney on July 3, 2010

Inspired by Fortune’s list under the same name, here’s our version. All do respect to Fortune, but some items that shouldn’t be there were there and some that should be there weren’t there. So here we go, in no particular order.

61) Red Dawn

The Commies invaded, American teenagers fought back. And won. Classic. Too bad MGM has put the remake, featuring a Chinese invasion, on hold indefinitely.

62) The Alamo

Remember it.

63) Camping

Roughing it in the wilderness. Stereotypically American.

64) Presidential Inaugurations

The awesomeness of the 21-gun salute aside, power is transferred peacefully on a specific date and time. 221 years and counting.

65) Twitter

Hold on a minute. I’m updating my feed.

66) Halloween

I’ve always loved Halloween, and evidently I’m not alone. You scare the crap out of the neighborhood kids and then give them candy. Ah, October.

67) Television Debates

Yes, they provide little time for substantive answers and can be biased. But they’re also an effective outlet for communication with the voters. And they’re an essential part of American politics.

68) Google

The world’s search engine, based in California.

69) Pickup Trucks

Ask Scott Brown.

70) The Second Amendment

Technically we covered this with the Bill of Rights, but I thought it deserved its own listing. Protection against criminals and tyrants alike.
