House Democrat Ellsworth Runs Against Himself

by Stephan Tawney on July 7, 2010

Recognizing how difficult November will be for Democrats, Representative Brad Ellsworth (D-NC) has decided to bring hackishness to a whole new level: He’s running against himself for United States Senate.

In a new television ad, the two-term Congressman blasts Washington for wasting our money. One problem: Ellsworth voted in favor of ObamaCare and TARP — two of the biggest money-wasting and big-government measures in history.

While representing IN-08 from January 2007 to now, Ellsworth supported the expansion of annual federal budgets from the $2.77 trillion in the budget that preceded Democratic control of Congress to the over $3.8 trillion of FY2010, an expansion of 37% in just three years. He voted for the ObamaCare bill whose final version was written behind closed doors and pushed through Congress without giving any time for careful perusal or debate. Ellsworth also backed TARP and Porkulus, the former of which ran off the rails and the latter of which managed to waste $800 billion more in off-budget dollars to deliver the worst civilian population participation in the workforce in over 10 years.

The House Democrat doesn’t even bother addressing his hypocrisy. Apparently his strategy is to simply avoid addressing his actual record. In fact, he downplays his time in Congress on his campaign website:

Brad has represented the 8th Congressional District since 2007, and currently serves on the House Agriculture, Armed Services, and Small Business Committees. During his brief time in office, he has put his experiences as Sheriff to work solving problems, resolving disputes, and working to change the way Washington works.

“Brief time in office” in this case is defined as taking office in January 2007 and then voting for every major big government and big spending measure over the next 3 years.

Ellsworth wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to vote for expansions of government and big spending measures, pleasing Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama, then come back to Indiana’s 8th Congressional district and rail against big government and big spending.
