Islamists Deface 1,700-Year-Old Church in Turkey

by Stephan Tawney on July 14, 2010

There’s some news from the “religion of peace” front today. The 1,700-year-old Mor Jacob Syriac Orthodox Church in Mardin, Turkey, was defaced by Islamists who spray painted pro-Islamic slogans in green paint on the walls.

The offenders allegedly defaced the stone walls of the church on Monday with various slogans, such as “Clear off, bastards,” “Clear off, Zionist dogs,” “Heretics, lay off,” and “Zionist powers, clear off,” in Turkish and, “Allah u Muhammed,” and “Prophet Muhammad, fight the infidels and hypocrites,” in Arabic.

A fence had been constructed around the church for a renovation, but apparently it was torn down by the Islamists in order to access the site. Police are supposedly fingerprinting the site now.

“If the police respect all cultures, they should quickly solve this case and prosecute the offenders. The case is going to be followed closely by the municipality. [The municipality] is not going to regard this as an ordinary crime. Mor Jacob Church is an asset to people of all religions who belong to this community, and the community is going to protect this asset,” [Nusaybin Mayor Ay?e Gökkan]  said.

It sounds like he’s not sure the police will actually follow-through on the investigation, and there’s probably good reason for that.

Turkey has been moving towards Islamization and has been trying to establish itself as a savior of the Islamic world. Where will those efforts go if suddenly the government is arresting and punishing Muslims for attacking and defacing the religious institution of infidels?

Don’t be surprised if this investigation disappears or ends in some whimper of “the perpetrators were hard to find but we all need to be more tolerant” crap.
