To say this guy is despicable is like calling Adolf Hitler an unfriendly man. Former hacker and current asshole Julian Assange, who recently threatened the lives of innocent Afghans and the American troops fighting for their freedom, is set to leak more secret documents that will once again risk the lives of American soldiers.
By the way, don’t think for a moment that Assange simply has a hard-on for transparency. He doesn’t. In fact, many details of his life and residence have long been secretive. He has recently cancelled appearances due to fear for his own safety. Wikipedia says Assange wouldn’t even tell people his birth date in the past. His organization, Wikileaks, is as secretive as he is, if not more so. So he’s not some crusader for a free flow of information.
No, Assange is an open opponent of both the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the American military. He accuses American servicemen of war crimes every chance he gets. His organization recently edited video of an Appache attack on insurgents to make it appear that the American pilots murdered innocent civilians and Reuters journalists in cold blood.
Bottom line: His leaks are driven by an anti-American, anti-war political agenda — not a push for transparency.
One more thought: Obviously these leaks need to stop, and the European nations which harbor Assange aren’t about to stop him. So what to do? I’d start by making it too painful for anyone to cooperate with Wikileaks.
If you leak secret military documents, you should be tried with treason. Article III, Section III clearly defines treason as including the provision of “Aid and Comfort” to the enemy. Leaking these documents provide propaganda for the enemy and intentionally assists them in their fight against the United States. As far as I know, the death penalty remains an available punishment for the crime.
On a more extreme level, go after the website and those who run it. That’s not nice? Tough shit. Neither is risking the lives of American soldiers and innocent civilians as part of your anti-war, anti-American agenda. And who would Assange and his allies be to complain? They are actively risking the safety and welfare of innocent people for their political agenda. Suddenly they’ll have a problem with others risking their own welfare in pursuit of an agenda?
