E! Online is reporting that Sarah Palin’s eldest daughter, Bristol, has broken off her second engagement to her baby’s father, Levi Johnston. The two were originally set to get married in 2008, after it was revealed that Bristol was pregnant. But that engagement was broken off and Levi went on to attack the Palin family while reveling in the media spotlight that came with his statements.

The latest development comes shortly after reports that Johnston has fathered another baby with another woman, though E! says those reports were false. Supposedly it was another one of Levi’s ex-es, Briana Plum, who wrecked these recent wedding plans.

“There was an interview with her and Bristol wasn’t happy about some of the things said,” the source tells E! News. “There was also some picture on Facebook of him and Briana and Bristol just said, ‘Let’s hold off on the engagement.’ “

As for political implications, let’s be honest: This story will come up again if former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin decides to run in 2012. While Palin campaigns partially on family values and American tradition, the baby daddy of her unwed young daughter will be shown on B-roll talking to Oprah about Jerry Springer-like fights amongst family members — true or not. That will hurt.

From a personal perspective, Bristol should move on. I understand that Levi is her baby’s father and will continue to be in her life (barring any changes in custody). But come on. This will never be normal. Never. Johnston has smeared her family repeatedly and will never be trusted by Mamma and Pappa Palin. Bristol obviously can’t trust him, either. Are things about to get better? No? Then move on.
