Flashback: Obama Calls Muslim Call To Prayer “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth”

by Stephan Tawney on August 16, 2010

Via Drudge, here’s a statement that Barack Obama will regret in the wake of a 13-story mosque being built at Ground Zero. And, you know, after his full-fledged endorsement of the same.

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

Hey, you know what will be great imagery? Those same calls echoing in the cavern created by the attack perpetrated by Islamic terrorists who killed 3,000 innocent people on September 11th.

Having traveled in Turkey, I actually have to agree with the President on this one. The call to prayer is very beautiful.

My weirdest experience with the call to prayer occured in Bodrum, a resort town on the Agean Sea. My little sister and I were drinking at a bar that was playing 50 Cent when the call to the evening prayer went out. It was an odd mixture of cultures.
