Democratic Senate Nominee: Extend All Bush Tax Cuts

by Stephan Tawney on August 19, 2010

Now isn’t the time to restrict growth by raising taxes. We’ve heard that in the past from countless Republicans and economists, but now we’re told the same thing by a growing chorus of Democrats.

Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE), Kent Conrad (D-ND), and Evan Bayh (D-IN) have already gone on record supporting an extension of the 2003  Bush tax cuts. The Wall Street Journal reports that a half-dozen House Democrats have publicly taken the same stance.

Today, Robin Carnahan, the Democratic nominee for United States Senate in Missouri, reportedly announced her support for extending all of the Bush tax cuts — including those intended for wealthy Americans.

Her stance makes sense, of course. You don’t create jobs by taking even more money away from the private sector. And you especially don’t take more money away from the private sector in the middle of a prolonged recession.

Still, it’s refreshing to see a growing number of Democrats recognizing the reality of economics. Even if most of them are only doing so for electoral reasons.
