Honestly, I haven’t been following the story. Apparently Wyclef Jean, whose charity has a history of some shady financial dealings, was going to utilize good will earned during the Haitian earthquake (he helped raise money) and run for president.
Well, he’s been barred from the election. Why? The election bureau, which evidently decides who can run for president in Haiti, didn’t provide an excuse. Jean himself says he was disqualified because he didn’t meet the necessary qualification of having lived in Haiti for five years before running for president.
Honestly, I can’t say that I mourn for Haiti. What substantive executive experience does Jean possess? He was running for president because his post-earthquake activities earned him some good will in a country in which he doesn’t live.
Haiti needs to rebuild from the ground up, and now isn’t the time for an amateur leader whose qualifications consist of running a charity known for its mishandling of finances.
