The Florida governor’s own campaign confirms that Crist was in New England, and in fact at Martha’s Vineyard specifically, on Friday last week. And say, where has Barack Obama been since Thursday of last week? If you guessed “Martha’s Vineyard”, you’re right!

Now, the campaign does deny that Crist met personally with Obama, but there have been reported sightings of the governor with Secret Service agents — a group of individuals who follow the president around but tend to stay away from the leader of the Sunshine State.

So why would Crist be meeting with Obama? Speculation abounds. Maybe he intends to drop out of the race (his victory is very unlikely) so that Meek can pick up Democratic votes, and wants to know what political favor he could receive in return. Or maybe he’s seeking Obama’s endorsement or notifying him that he will caucus with Democrats if elected.

Who knows. For now, there’s this: It appears that Charlie Crist, supposed Independent candidate, met with Barack Obama at Martha’s Vineyard late last week. And we don’t know why.
