House Democrat Jokes About Nancy Pelosi Dying

by Stephan Tawney on August 26, 2010

To which path of commentary shall we stick? We have a couple of options: 1) Imagine if a Republican had said this; 2) Will the media still pretend there’s no Democratic civil war while insisting Republicans are in a state of disarray?

Ah, well, anyway:

Bright, who is facing a battle against Montgomery City Councilwoman Martha Roby this fall, joked that Pelosi might lose her own election, decide not to run for the speaker’s job or otherwise not be available.

He suggested, jokingly he insisted to his audience, that Pelosi could fall ill and die in coming months. That remark drew laughter from the crowd.

Though he has a reputation as the second most independent member of Congress, he has been routinely blasted for voting for Pelosi to be speaker.

Bright is Congressman Bobby Bright (D-AL), who represents Alabama’s 2nd Congressional district. He’s also a reliable vote for Democrats (he’s voted with them 73% of the time), and has voted in favor of multiple pieces of liberal spending legislation. So conservatives won’t be sad to see him go.

His chances this November were already slim. Alabama’s 2nd is a usually-Republican district which only put Bright in office during the 2008 Democratic sweep. Bright is the first Democrat to represent the district since 1965, and voters are likely to throw him out of office based on party affiliation alone.
