Now Democrats Want To Be Independent?

by Stephan Tawney on August 26, 2010

What do Jason Altmire, Stephanie Handlin, Joe Donnelly, Zack Space, Bobby Bright, and Mike McIntyre all have in common? They’re all House Democrats who helped pass Nancy Pelosi’s tax-and-spend agenda only to turn around and tout “independent” credentials now that their jobs are in danger.

How often did these supposed “independents” vote with their party leadership? Let’s review the record, courtesy of Open Congress.

  • Jason Altmire (D-PA): 90%
  • Stephanie Sandlin (D-SD): 91%
  • Joe Donnelly (D-IN): 90%
  • Zack Space (D-OH): 93%
  • Bobby Bright (D-AL): 73%
  • Mike McIntyre (D-NC): 90%

Um, hey, why did five of these six “independents” vote with their party leadership 90% of the time or higher? In fact, the only one qualified to lay any sort of claim to “independence” is Bobby Bright, and even he voted with his party’s leadership nearly three-quarters of the time.

It’s all absurd. These House Democrats were there for Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama on just about every single vote. Now they want us to believe that they’re free-thinking, independent-voting representatives of the people? The record tells a very different story.
