Federal Employees Owe $1 Billion In Overdue Taxes

Federal employees owe a combined $1 billion in overdue taxes, including employees of Congress who owe $9.3 million and the White House who owe more than $800,000.

Capitol Hill employees owed $9.3 million in overdue taxes at the end of last year, a sliver of the $1 billion owed by federal workers nationwide but one with potential political ramifications for members of Congress.

The debt among Hill employees has risen at a faster rate than the overall tax debt on the government’s books, according to Internal Revenue Service data. It comes at a time when some Republican members are pushing for the firings of government workers who owe the IRS and President Obama has urged a crackdown on delinquent government contractors.

The IRS information does not identify delinquent taxpayers by name, party affiliation or job title and does not indicate whether members of Congress are among the scofflaws. It shows that 638 employees, or about 4 percent, of the 18,000 Hill workers owe money.

The average unpaid tax bill is $12,787 among the Senate’s delinquent taxpayers and $15,498 among those working in the House.

But wait, there’s more!

463 employees of the Labor Department owe a combined $7,481,463 in back taxes. But maybe they’re only following the lead of their boss’ husband. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis’ spouse had tax troubles of his own, being forced to pay thousands of dollars in fines to settle liens against his business.

At the Department of Justice, almost 2,000 employees owe a combined $14,350,152 to the Internal Revenue Service. They’re probably too busy going after Arizona for attempting to enforce immigration laws to file their taxes properly.

At the Department of Homeland Security, under the leadership of Janet “Man-made disasters” Napolitano, more than 4,800 employees owe a whopping $37,012,174 in overdue taxes.

The total combined overdue tax bill for Barack Obama’s executive branch is $59,781,577. And again, federal employees nationwide owe about $1 billion to the Internal Revenue Service.

But we can’t extend tax cuts for businesses because the “rich” must be forced to pay their “fair share” of taxes. Maybe the Obama Administration should clean up its own backyard before commenting on business’ overgrown lawn.

Stephan: Mark Levin had a good quote about the story tonight. You can’t have your tax cuts because the hogs are busy chowing down at the trough.
