Rare Video: North Koreans After The Floods

by Stephan Tawney on September 10, 2010

South Korean media have obtained rare video footage from inside North Korea. The video, which was shot clandestinely, shows North Koreans living on the streets of the border town Shinuiju after severe flooding affected their area.

The North Korean subjects, including young children, are seen standing or sitting on the street with their water-damaged belongings. Some are purchasing drinking water from a salesman — a costly transaction since the flooding.

The price of water has increased since the floods, according to the agency’s source, with a bowl costing 6 pence. The usual monthly wages are around £1.30.

Worse yet, the flooding has impacted food production. Which is a problem because North Korea, one of the last openly communist states in existence, has trouble providing enough food for its 23 million subjects (not citizens) in an ordinary, flood-free year. In fact, the Telegraph says the country falls “a million tonnes short of the amount needed” every year.
