Surprise: Pelosi Accepted Significantly More Lobbyist Cash Than Boehner

by Stephan Tawney on September 13, 2010

Relevant because the White House, which has issued waiver after waiver to allow lobbyists to work in the administration, has been on a crusade against the left’s new favorite bogeyman for having ties to Washington lobbyists.

Timothy Carney of the Washington Examiner points out an inconvenient truth for Washington Democrats: Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Speaker of the House, the most powerful individual in the House of Representatives, arguably the most powerful Democrat in Washington, has accepted twice as much lobbyist cash as Boehner.

Oh, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) joined with Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to rake in more lobbyist cash in the past six months than John Boehner has in 12 years.

Here’s what they mean: from 1999 until today, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, Boehner has raised $299,490 from lobbyists.

For comparison, Harry Reid, Blanche Lincoln, and Chuck Schumer have each raised more money from lobbyists in this cycle alone.

This election cycle, Boehner is not even in the top 20 recipients of lobbyist cash. He’s raised less than $40,000 from lobbyists this cycle — compared to Nancy Pelosi’s $71,000 from lobbyists.

None of this was or is mentioned by the New York Times, which has apparently decided to revert to old job as the attack dog for the Democratic Party. The Times both published a shoddy, poorly-researched accusation and failed to note a far more serious issue in the Democratic Party. All the “news” that’s convenient to print.

Incidentally, the two individuals who are running for re-election in the House who have accepted the most lobbyist cash? Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland and Charlie Rangel of New York — both prominent and powerful liberal Democrats.

Of the top 20 recipients of lobbyist cash in the House of Representatives, 18 are Democrats. Minority Leader John Boehner is nowhere to be found on the list. Representative Sander Levin (D-Mich), the chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, has accepted about $60,000 in this cycle alone.

And yet the Times decided to focus on Boehner, conveniently just days after Obama decided to make the same man his newest bogeyman. Meanwhile, the White House and its allies in Congress throw stones from their house made of glass.
