Republican Strategist: Millions Just Opened Up To Defeat Toomey and Kirk

by Stephan Tawney on September 14, 2010

More specifically, millions of dollars the Democratic Party would have otherwise spent on fighting Mike Castle in Delaware.

Well, a few million in spending just opened up for the Dems to spend against Toomey, Portman, Kirk, etc.

Democrats no longer have to worry about defending Chris Coons, the party’s nominee, in Delaware. Christine O’Donnell won the GOP primary but has just about no chance to win the general. In short, she’s a minor threat at best to the Democratic-held seat.

That frees up party money to fight against Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania, Rob Portman in Ohio, Mark Kirk in Illinois. All places Democrats were beginning to accept they would lose. Millions of dollars purchases quite a few bumper stickers.

So we’ve lost a seat pickup in Delaware and have exposed our other, conservative nominees to more heat and pressure from their opponents. But at least we nominated Christine O’Donnell! She’ll give an awesome concession speech in November, I’m sure.

Update: Ace suggests five ways that O’Donnell could defeat Coons. Fair enough. But all of them strike me as less likely than Coons suddenly having an epiphany, deciding he can’t challenge a fellow conservative, and dropping out days before the election.

I’ll gladly eat crow in November if I’m wrong. But based on polling, Delaware’s electoral history, and knowing what ammunition the Democrats can use against O’Donnell in the blue state…I don’t think I am. I hope I am, I don’t think I am.
