Wow: Charles Djou Leads in Hawaii Congressional Race

by Stephan Tawney on October 13, 2010

Significant because Djou was only able to win the special election after two Democrats split the rest of the vote. Now the Republican incumbent in facing a single Democratic challenger…and is winning.

Rep. Charles Djou (R-Hawaii), who won a special election this past May with less than 40 percent of the vote, currently leads Democrat Colleen Hanabusa 45 percent to 41, with 12 percent of likely voters undecided, according to The Hill’s 2010 Midterm Election Poll.

Djou reportedly has a 60% approval rating in Hawaii’s 1st congressional district. That’s impressive, considering the district is overwhelmingly Democratic. In fact, Djou is the first Republican to represent the district since Pat Saiki left in 1991. And she was the first Republican to represent the district.

So in the four decades that the 1st district has existed, there have been a total of two Republican representatives, with a cumulative total of less than five years in office. And yet Djou holds a 60% approval rating and is on track to re-election. Astounding.

Here’s the guy’s campaign website. Donation button is on the left-hand side, if you feel so obliged. Did I mention that this is Obama’s home district? And that Democrats want badly to take back this seat in November? So Djou being re-elected would be an embarrassment for both Obama and his party’s establishment? Yeah.
