It’s Time to Stop Government Funding of NPR

by Stephan Tawney on October 21, 2010

Today, NPR demonstrated that relatively mainstream American views will not be tolerated on its airwaves. The network has now gone on record protecting cartoonists who refer to limited government activists in derogative sexual terms, while simultaenously punishing liberal commentators who dare to stray from the far-left line.

Such behavior would be acceptable at a privately-funded institution that wishes to push its ideology. But NPR is not a privately funded institutition. It receives public funding, courtesy of the American taxpayer. It uses that money to insult mainstream political views and punish even its own fellow leftists who dare to say what most Americans are thinking.

It’s time to stop public funding of NPR.

If NPR wants to push a leftist ideology, fine. Have leftists fund the network. Don’t expect taxpayers of all stripes to hand over their hard-earned tax dollars so some latte-sipping host can mock conservatives while the network’s administrators shut down dissent even from the left. We don’t need to be funding that crap.

Liberals wouldn’t appreciate FOX News or talk radio receiving public funding. Tax dollars should be going to non-partisan operations. NPR is no longer, if it ever was, a non-partisan network.

Shut it down. It’s anti-American to force taxpayers to pay for liberal facist radio.
