Mob Banker Giannoulias’ Attack on Kirk Backfires Spectacularly

by Stephan Tawney on October 22, 2010

An attempt by mob banker Alexi Giannoulias to attack Republican rival Mark Kirk over his vote for tax breaks backfired spectacularly when members of the press bothered to point out his blatant lies and hypocrisy.

First some background: Mark Kirk voted to extend tax breaks for major job-producing companies, including those who do business in China. Around the same time, he hosted a fundraiser for American citizens who were living in China. Mob banker Giannoulias claims that Kirk engaged in “economic treason” by selling out the American people in exchange for donations from China. Basically, he suggests the two events are linked.

A couple of problems with Giannoulias’s attack. First of all, independent evidence confirms that the vote was scheduled after Kirk had planned the fundraiser. So the two events were not connected unless the United States Congress scheduled the vote based on Kirk’s campaign scheduled. Needless to say, that’s extremely unlikely.

Problem two: Kirk was raising money — just $5,900 in total — from American citizens living in China. Hey, guess who held a fundraiser for American citizens in another foreign country, this time Canada? That’s right; mob banker Alexi Giannoulias.

When members of the media bring these inconvenient facts up, Giannoulias starts to backtrack, saying he’s just raising questions and the media should really be talking to Kirk. Except the media had already talked to Kirk, who provided independent evidence that mob banker Giannoulias is both a hypocrite and liar.

Giannoulias ends up looking like a fool. You can watch the video at the link.
