Pope: Immigration Can be Regulated, Immigrants Must Assimilate

by Stephan Tawney on October 27, 2010

Something to keep in mind when you hear American Catholic leaders shilling for the open-borders lobby in the name of religion. Pope Benedict XVI would kindly like to disagree with them.

States have the right to regulate migration flows and to defend their own frontiers, always guaranteeing the respect due to the dignity of each and every human person. Immigrants, moreover, have the duty to integrate into the host Country, respecting its laws and its national identity.

In short, be humane to immigrants you welcome into your country. And if you’re an immigrant, respect the laws and traditions of your new home.

See, Catholicism doesn’t demand uncontrolled migration or the loss of national identity. People who say otherwise are simply trying to convince Catholics not to question the logic of the policy because, hey, your religious tenants say you have to take that stance. It’s wrong.
