House Democrat: We’ll Probably Lose the House

by Stephan Tawney on October 28, 2010

Not a shocking revelation except that it’s coming from a Democrat in a relatively close race just five days before election day.

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., made a rare pre-election concession at a candidate forum in his hometown of Greenwich — just not the kind that his Republican opponent Dan Debicella is ultimately seeking.

The freshman congressman acknowledged during a Greenwich Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday that Democrats stand to lose seats in the House next Tuesday, tilting the balance of power back to the GOP.

“I do think there is a high probability right now that Republicans take control of the House,” Himes told about 40 chamber members and 20 Greenwich High School students during the event at the Greenwich Water Club.

Asked whether he would support Nancy Pelosi for speaker should Democrats keep power, Himes deflected by saying that he hadn’t thought about it (almost definitely a lie). Asked if he currently supports Pelosi, Himes again deflected. Then he refused to answer any more questions about the speakership.
