The fat man was Meet the Press this morning and was asked to comment on Delaware. Here’s what he said:
Tea party favorite Christine O’Donnell won the GOP nomination in an upset over moderate Rep. Mike Castle. But she lost the general election Tuesday to Democrat Chris Coons.
Christie says he was proud to have endorsed Castle…
Christie told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “I think Delaware was a missed opportunity to have a really good U.S. senator.”
“really good” is a bit too much, but otherwise he’s right: It was a wasted opportunity.
Mike Castle was on path to a relatively easy victory until the upset in the primary. Then Christine O’Donnell trailed from the start. We went from having an almost guaranteed senator who voted with us, oh, 70% of the time to an individual who would vote with us 100% of the time but didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning.
We effectively traded a reliable “no” vote on ObamaCare and “yes” vote on permanent tax cut extensions, for a guy who called himself a “bearded Marxist”. All so we could say we nominated a hardcore conservative in the primary.
Oh: And spare me the “we’ll be better off in the Senate minority” argument. Most of the people pushing for O’Donnell and other flawed candidates weren’t aiming for Senate minority. They were aiming for the majority, as were most Republicans. That’s just after-the-fact CYA/silver lining bullcrap.
