Bachmann Drops Bid for Conference Chair

Michelle Bachmann (R-Minn) has dropped her bid for House Republican Conference chair, effectively ensuring that the role will be filled by Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), who received Bachmann’s “enthusiastic support” in her statement.

Hensarling had been racking up endorsements from well-known conservative members like Paul Ryan, Ron Paul, Eric Cantor, and Mike Pence.

Bachmman’s endorsement of Hensarling was resounding:

“Jeb has demonstrated his commitment to limited government, reduced spending and lower taxes and he will be a strong voice for the Tea Party’s call for these values,” according to Bachmann’s statement, sent by spokesman Sergio Gor.

Indeed, the fact that the battle for conference chair was between Bachmann and Hensarling was a win-win for conservatives. Both are renowned for their stances in favor of limited government and individual liberty, and whichever won would have served conservatives well.

Apparently Bachmann, never afraid to speak her mind, felt Hensarling would be just fine in the role. Hensarling responded with a pleasant thank you.

“Michele Bachmann is a committed movement conservative whose effective voice played an important role in America’s decision to trust House Republicans once again,” Hensarling said. “She is a dear friend, and I am humbled to earn her support. I look forward to her energetic leadership in a united House Republican Conference during the 112th Congress.”

And so we now likely know what the House Republican leadership will look like for the 112th Congress. John Boehner (R-OH) will serve as Speaker, Eric Cantor (R-VA) will be Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will likely be Whip, and Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) will serve as Conference Chair.
