Jamie Dupree of Cox Radio quotes Speaker-to-be John Boehner (R-OH) as saying that he will continue to fly commercial rather than take possession of the military aircraft used to shuttle current Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) back and forth.
Boehner: “I have flown back and forth to my district on commercial aircraft and I’m going to continue to do that”
Dupree notes:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi has taken some GOP flak for using military jets to fly back & forth to her district
Speaker Boehner flying commercial would be symbolic of Congressional leaders sacrificing alongside ordinary Americans in a tough economic climate. Hopefully the quote is accurate and Boehner follows through.
Update: Apparently a group of reporters heard Boehner say just that. National Review’s Kathryn Jean Lopez:
There’s been a lot of controversy about the expense of and use of military aircraft to get Speakers of the House around in recent years — especially when Nancy Pelosi asked for an upgrade (and because she’s a she). That is apparently about to end. Presumptive Speaker Boehner just told reporters he’s flown commercial for 20 years and will continue to do so as Speaker.
A great move by Boehner. It certainly doesn’t harm his reputation with fiscal conservatives.
