Rick Perry Will Lead RGA After Haley Barbour

by Stephan Tawney on November 12, 2010

Texas Governor Rick Perry, who was just given a second term by voters in his state, will be the next governor to lead the Republican Governor’s Association, sources tell Politico. Perry, a staunch conservative and defender of the Constitution, will succeed Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour.

But does this mean Perry won’t run for president?

Perry recently released a book taking aim at the federal government and both the subject of the tome, “Fed Up!,” and his promotion of it have increased speculation that he’s eyeing a presidential bid.

But his appointment to helm the RGA heading into 2011 – when three states will hold governors’ races – amounts to the first concrete evidence that the Texan is serious when he says he has no interest in pursuing the White House. It would be nearly impossible to raise money for the committee and help direct the gubernatorial contests in Louisiana, Mississippi and Kentucky while simultaneously running for president.

Perry has actually lead the organization before, during the difficult 2008 cycle.

For his part, it’s widely believed that Barbour — the popular governor of Mississippi — is planning a run for president. Barbour as RNC chairman oversaw the 1994 Republican Revolution, when the GOP seized control of both chambers of Congress for the first time since 1954. However, he also previously worked a lobbyist — not a popular career amongst voters.

I sure hope that Perry either puts a stop to RGA’s spamming, or decides he really doesn’t want anything to do with an organization that has to resort to theft of resources and services to survive.

    FYI…

Perry was just given an unprecedented THIRD full term by voters in his state, not second. After assuming office as governor in 2000 when W. resigned to become President, Perry was elected governor in 2002, 2006, and again in 2010.
