The numbers actually get worse, if you can believe it. Nearly 7% admit to having engaged in gang rape. And there’s this:
More than 51% of the 511 women interviewed said they’d experienced violence from men, and 78% of men said they’d committed violence against women.
A quarter of the women interviewed said they’d been raped, but the study says only one in 25 rapes are reported to police.
The guilt must be quite heavy for South African men, right? Actually, a full one-third say they feel no guilt. Two-thirds of men who admitted to rape said they raped because of a sense of “sexual entitlement”.
Other popular motivating factors included a desire to punish women who rejected or angered them, and raping out of boredom, Jewkes said.
To quote Jewkes, rape is “seen as a legitimate activity” in South Africa. He also blames apartheid for the culture of rape. I wonder how long that excuse will be used to cover for the vile behavior of so many South African men.
