Lieberman Backs Obama/GOP Tax Compromise

by Stephan Tawney on December 7, 2010

Senator Joseph Lieberman (ID-CT) says he will vote for the tax compromise worked out between Congressional Republicans and President Barack Obama.

Not all Democrats are as supportive of the plan, however. Congressional Democrats and the White House are trading barbs over the compromise this morning. Democrats say Obama surrendered too early, Obama says Democrats had the chance to run the table but focused on other issues instead.

To quote a senior administration official:

“It was like the Jets versus Sharks except there weren’t any Jets,” the official said. “Senator Schumer says he wants a fight? He couldn’t hold his caucus together.”

“This isn’t a debate in a lab somewhere,” the official continued. “People’s taxes were going to go up, and then we were going to have a Senate with a slimmer margin and House under Republican control.”

Civil war ain’t pretty. Though it is enjoyable in this case.
