Steele Running for RNC Chair Again

by Stephan Tawney on December 14, 2010

And he demonstrates that he still doesn’t get it. Greta Van Susteren asks him why Republicans want to replace him after just one term. His response:

Well, I think there’s a lot of reasons for that. My style is a little bit different than most conventional Republican Party chairmen. My style is more grass roots-oriented. I’m much more of a street guy. I love hanging out in boardrooms, but I prefer to be in neighborhoods and communities. My first trip as chairman was to go to Harlem. And a number of members asked me, Why are you going to Harlem? Because that’s where the votes are. The party needs to get outside its comfort zone.

Wrong on multiple counts.

First of all, we don’t like you because he’s utterly failed as RNC chairman. His own political director resigned and went on to announce that the RNC’s inability to support 72-hour GOTV efforts cost Republicans 21 House seats and 3 Senate seats. And yet the organization is still millions in debt.

Second, the job of the RNC chairman isn’t to bring the party outside of its comfort zone. It’s not the RNC chairman’s job to court voters in Harlem. The first and foremost responsibility is raising money from party donors. You do that so you have the funding to provide support for your candidates.

As for his outreach, please. He told black voters that they have no reason to support the GOP. He went on a liberal black-hosted show on CNN and agreed with the host’s anti-Republican views. This while he attacked a certain righty talk show host for daring to say it would be best for America if the left-wing agenda failed.

So let’s see how Steele has done.

Fundraising? Fail. Minority outreach? Fail. Energizing the grassroots? Fail. Sufficiently supporting the candidates? Fail.

Michael Steele? Fail.
