Movies to See in 2011, Part One

by Stephan Tawney on December 16, 2010

Green Hornet

Hitting theaters on January 14th. Starring Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos, Christopher Waltz, Edward Furlong, Angela Bassett, and Tom Wilkinson.

The Way Back

Opening worldwide January 21st. Starring Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan, and Mark Strong. Actually, I’ll be making sure to see this one. It’s about a group of prisoners who escape a Soviet gulag in Siberia during World War II. Based on the memoir by S?awomir Rawicz.

Sanctum

Opening February 4th. A 3D action-thriller focusing on a team of divers exploring the largest, most inaccessible underwater cave in the world. A tropical storm forces them further under, as they battle to stay alive through raging water and deadly terrain.

The Eagle

Opening February 11. Starring Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, and Mark Strong. Set in 2nd century AD, tells the tale of a young Roman officer’s search for the truth about the disappearance of his father in northern Britain. Based on the legend of the Ninth Legion.

Gnomeo and Juliet

Opening February 11th. This one is for the kids. It’s a CGI animated film from Touchstone Pictures, telling the story of Romeo and Juliet with garden gnomes.

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never

No. No. Just no. No way in hell. Nope. Not gonna happen. I’d pour a shaker of salt into an open wound on my eyeball than see this.

I Am Number Four

Opening February 18th. Not my cup of tea but it’s produced by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, and it focuses on teen aliens. So it’s gonna be big.

Unknown (That’s the name of the film.)

Opening February 18th. Starring Liam Neeson, Diane Kruger, January Jones, and Frank Langella. Sounds like a plot that’s been done a million times before. A man awakens from coma, his identity was stolen, no one believes him, and he sets out with a young ally to set the record straight. Based in Berlin.

Apollo 18

Opening March 4th. You may recall that the Apollo 18 mission was canceled…or was it? Yes. It was. Still, the film is based on the premise that it wasn’t. Instead, apparently, the mission went to the moon and the astronauts found…aliens or something. Looks pretty good.

Rango

Opening March 4th. Another one for the kids. Featuring the voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy, and Abigail Breslin. It’s a computer-animated comedy film about a pet chameleon. Full details here.

Battle: Los Angeles

Opening March 11th. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, and Michael Pena. I’m somewhat confused by the premise. Apparently it’s based upon the 1942 incident known as Battle of Los Angeles, in which a false alarm lead to anti-aircraft artillery firing into the sky for more than an hour. It’s apparently changed to include a Marine battalion fighting a global alien invasion. So there’s that.
