Florida Senate: Jeb Bush Leads Bill Nelson

by Stephan Tawney on December 21, 2010

I’ll take Jeb Bush if he’s the only candidate with a chance to beat Bill Nelson (D), but he wouldn’t be my first choice were I able to vote in the Sunshine State. For one, he supports amnesty. Two, he reminds me of a get-along Republican who would vote with Democrats if given enough political cover.

So like I said, I’ll take him if he’s the only viable candidate. And that may end up being the case.

Bush continues to be well liked in the state, sporting a 51/40 favorability. Bush is universally popular with the Republican base, is unusually popular with Democrats at a 29% favorability, and is on positive ground with independents as well. In a hypothetical contest with Nelson he leads 49-44, taking a pretty substantial 23% of the Democratic vote and holding Nelson to a four point advantage with independents in contrast to the wide margins he has over the other contenders.

Nelson leads the other potential candidates for now, but that may end up changing as voters become familiar with them. For example, current Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) is unknown to a full 58% of voters (he was appointed). And a full 56% say they don’t know enough about Representative Connie Mack (R-FL).
