Will Rick Perry Run for President in 2012?

by Stephan Tawney on December 27, 2010

He sounds like a pretty strong “no”.

“Not for me,” Perry said. “I happen to think that the governors are where the action is.”

When pressed on whether that was a “definite maybe,” Perry shot back, “As a definite no, brother.”

On the one hand, Perry was just named the new chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association, filling a position vacated by Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, who is believed to be considering a run for president but who I believe is already toast. So he seems to have commitments to other projects right now.

On the other hand, those commitments wouldn’t stop him from vacating the position to run for president. And it’s not like he’d be the first politician to strongly deny considering a run for office shortly before announcing a run for office. There’s always a way out of his previous statements. (Those statements were based on conditions of the time, now I believe it’s only responsible for me to challenge the far-leftists in control.)

What are his chances if he does run? Who knows. I think he’s a great conservative and would make an equally great president. But is the country willing to elect another multi-term governor from Texas so soon?

More: Meanwhile, Perry has been named “Texan of the Year” by the Dallas Morning News. The editorial says Perry, “proved to be a peerless political brawler”. Hmm.
