China to Create the World’s Largest City?

by Stephan Tawney on December 31, 2010

Reportedly by combining Beijing and Tianjin — both of which are major cities already.

Such a move would result in the creation of an ultra-mega-city with a direct population of 19 million. Another 60 million people would be living in the surrounding area. 79 freaking million people in the city and its suburbs. Holy crap, Batman.

The current largest city by population is another Chinese city: Shanghai with its 13.8 million people.

New York is now the world’s 14th largest city by population. Los Angeles is 47th with 3.8 million people.

So this new city would be larger than Los Angeles and Shanghai combined. It’s also larger than New York City and Los Angeles combined. You’d need to combine New York and Shanghai to create a more populous metropolis.
