These are movies than any self-respecting political junkie should have seen already, and that anyone newly-intrigued by politics absolutely must see.

5. The American President

Against the advice of his best political aides, a widower president decides to start dating again. But his new love is a lobbyist who, well, you have to see the movie. Starring Michael Douglas. Get it here.

4. All the President’s Men

Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman star as Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward — two unknown reporters who would uncover one of the largest political scandals in history. Get it here.

3. The War Room

This one is actually a documentary featuring James Carville and George Stephanopoulos fighting to make Bill Clinton president. Their eventual victory may be a sore spot for people like myself, but it’s an incredible insight into a presidential campaign. Get it here.

2. State of the Union

Frank Capra classic. Sex, corruption, special interests…politics. Starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Get it here.

1. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

The ultimate political movie. A young, innocent man is appointed to the United States Senate after his predecessor dies. He heads to Washington with a romantic view of politics and a grand love for his country.

While the latter never weakens, he is quickly taken advantage of by a massive political machine. He tries to stop the corruption by making a one-man stand for this seemingly-lost cause.

He stands on the floor of the Senate, filibustering the legislation, until he literally collapses. Despite his corrupt colleagues trying to eject him, he wins in the end.

Starring Jimmy Stewart. Get it here.
