Senate Democrats Unveil Package to Reduce Minority’s Power

by Stephan Tawney on January 5, 2011

Now that they’re no longer in the minority and no longer possess enough votes to override a filibuster attempt, Senate Democrats want to change the rules.

And today they unveiled a “reform” package that makes it much harder for the minority party, which was just granted more power by voters, to have a say in the legislative process.

Among the changes:

Minority members will actually need to stand on the floor the entire time in order to filibuster legislation.

Senators who have concerns with legislation being considered can no long place a hold on legislation anonymously.

The ability of the minority party to have a say in what gets debated is eliminated in a move even leftists concede reduces the power of the minority party.

Less time to debate nominations, meaning Obama’s reliably-controversial nominees get confirmed faster.

Democrats suddenly find their hand weakened in the game so they want to change the rules. Hugo Chavez is doing the same thing down in Venezuela. The opposition party has suddenly gained serious strength so his party has decided to massively expand his power. Start losing, change the rules.
