Lefties Angry that Republicans Only Read Current Constitution

by Stephan Tawney on January 6, 2011

Absolutely stupid.

Basically, lefties are angry that Republicans didn’t read parts of the Constitution that are no longer parts of the Constitution — parts that only remain in print form for historical purposes. So basically the left is angry that there are no video clips of Republicans reading text that says blacks should only be counted as 3/5s of a person.

I’d be angry too were the purpose of the reading to provide a history lesson. Removing old sections would be tantamount to whitewashing. But Boehner wasn’t providing a history lesson. He was reminding members that they’re bound by the supreme law of the land. He was reminding them that their powers are restrained by the Constitution.

In which case, including old and no longer enforceable provisions would be pointless. Why remind members that they’re bound by provisions which, um, actually don’t bind them anymore?

And do note: Slavery wasn’t ignored. The Thirteenth Amendment, which bans slavery and is obviously binding, was read aloud by Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), a black man and former leader of the civil rights movement.

One more thing: Republicans don’t “worship” the Constitution. They respect it. They may want to change it, but they want to change it through the constitutional amendment process — itself provided for by the Constitution. Which differs from the left’s strategy of simply ignoring inconvenient rights and power restrictions.
