While the creation of 103,000 jobs in December may sound good after months and months of unemployment increases, the Associated Press reports that creation was actually weaker than expected.
And the drop in the unemployment rate? Simple: People stopped looking for work, shrinking the workforce and therefore lowering the percentage of unemployment “workers”.
Even Barack Obama has conceded that the report shows we’re not creating jobs fast enough, according to the AP.
The unemployment rate has now been above 9% for 20 months, and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says we can expect high unemployment for another 4 to 5 years.
Basically, this morning’s job data is really good news if you only skim the surface and don’t look under the hood.
