A horror scene is unfolding in Arizona, where a lone gunman has shot at least 12 people, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), outside of a grocery store.

Multiple people are already reported dead. Others, including Giffords, are in critical condition at area hospitals. Giffords is undergoing emergency surgery.

Update: Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has issued a statement strongly condemning the attack and saying he is “horrified”.

Update X2: Giffords is a Blue Dog who supports the military, wants the border secured, has pushed for a crackdown on illegal immigration, and personally owns a gun. She was one of the Democrats who voted against Nancy Pelosi as speaker, and supported efforts to cut the budget.

Update X3: There are unconfirmed reports that one of the other individuals shot was is a federal judge. No word on his/her condition if true.

Update X4: CNN is reporting that a federal judge is amongst the other 11 individuals injured.

Update X5: Keep this statement in mind when anyone tries to tie these actions to conservatives.

Update X6: The New York Times prints the account of an ex-ER physician who was there:

Dr. Steven Rayle, a former emergency room doctor who now works in a hospice, said that he had witnessed the shootings. He said the congresswoman was standing behind a table outside the Safeway greeting passersby when the gunman approached her from behind, held a gun about a foot from her head and began firing.

. “He must have got off 20 rounds,” he said. Ms. Giffords slumped to the ground and staff members immediately rushed to her aid, Dr. Rayle said.

Dr. Rayle said he performed CPR on some of the victims. He said one of the victims was a young child and appeared to be in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

He said that one of the staffers tackled the gunman and that he and others helped detain the suspect. The doctor described the gunman as a white male in his mid-20s with short hair and “dressed in a shabby manner.”

Horrid.

Update X7: And just like that, Markos — who wasted no time blaming Republicans for the shooting — has deleted a post on his own website saying Giffords “is DEAD to me” for voting against Pelosi.

Update X8: NBC News reports that Federal Judge John Roll, who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush, was killed.

Update X9: The suspect has been identified as Jared Laughner.

Update X10: The name may be spelled wrong. A MySpace page under a different spelling has been pulled, though the last posting was a “goodbye” message. The account links a flag burning and lists books like “The Communist Manifesto” and “Mein Kampf” as favorite books. This guy sounds like he’s a few fries short of a happy meal.
