Ah, America’s new era of civility is off to a good start.
The House Democrat is Steve Cohen (D-TN), who is best known for being the only non-black to represent a black majority district. And he’s Jewish, so his invocation of Godwin’s Law on the floor of the House has a bit of extra douchebaggery behind it.
“They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like Goebbels,” Cohen said. “You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing. And Congressman Cohen didn’t stop there.
“The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believed it–believed it and you have the Holocaust. We heard on this floor, government takeover of health care. Politifact said the biggest lie of 2010 was a government takeover of health care because there is no government takeover,” Cohen said.
We’ll leave alone the fact that Politifact was trashed for its biased assessment and that government deciding to control health insurance and interfere between patients and doctors is, in fact, government running health care. Never mind all that.
Instead, concentrate on the fact that Republicans are being accused by the media of using hate speech while Democrats can call for the murder of governors and compare their political opponents to Nazis. Outrage from the media? None. Because apparently harsh rhetoric from Republicans sparks violence while even harsher rhetoric from Democrats is totally cool.
