Former Congressman Bob Barr (R-GA), a critic of Bush-era security policies and the 2008 Libertarian Party presidential nominee, was amongst a delegation of attorneys helping Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier return to Haiti and re-establish some level of political power in the country.
Barr insists he’s not serving as an attorney for Duvalier but is working as a consultant for the ex-dictator. In a statement on his website, Barr says it’s a trip that’s personal for him. He also says Duvalier brings a message of “hope” for the people of Haiti.
Duvalier fled Haiti 25 years ago after a popular uprising against his oppressive regime. He is believed to have stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from Haiti’s treasury and has already been arrested on related charges. He may also face charges of human rights abuses in the future.
Bob Barr, by the way, is the same man who turned against the Patriot Act because it infringes on rights. Apparently his libertarian stances end at the water’s edge. Past that, he’ll assist a corrupt and oppressive dictator in regaining political clout in a country that ejected him a quarter-century ago.
