Obama: Hey, Who’s Up for More Spending?

by Stephan Tawney on January 22, 2011

Or, a case for why Obama is the most tone-deaf president in American history.

What could go wrong?

President Barack Obama will call for new government spending on infrastructure, education and research in his State of the Union address Tuesday, sharpening his response to Republicans in Congress who are demanding deep budget cuts, people familiar with the speech said.

Also demanding budget cuts in response to impending fiscal disaster? The American people.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the green energy sector, always a favorite of Democrats, will be amongst those likely to benefit from Obama’s new spending proposal. And people familiar with the plan say any spending cuts Obama has proposed will fall short of Republican expectation.

So Obama has recognized the threat of an unsustainable deficit and sees that we’re on a road to fiscal ruin. In response, he’s proposed lots of more spending and an insufficient number of budget cuts. And he’ll attempt to justify continued fiscal recklessness by insisting it will make us more competitive against countries like China.

Republicans want $100 billion cut from the budget, and have already laid out a plan to cut $2.5 trillion over the next 10 years. Let’s just say they’re unlikely to rubber-stamp Obama’s proposal.
